Know Your Rights

You can refuse an increase

If your landlord proposes an increase above the TAL guideline, you have the right to refuse. You must respond in writing within one month of receiving the notice.

Contest at the TAL

If you refuse the increase, your landlord must apply to the TAL to fix the rent. The TAL will determine the fair increase based on the landlord's actual costs.

Notice requirements

Your landlord must give you written notice of the increase 3-6 months before your lease ends, depending on lease length. A verbal notice is not valid.
