Waste & Recycling
Montreal waste collection varies by borough. Check your borough's schedule at montreal.ca:
- Regular trash: usually weekly (green or black bin)
- Recycling: biweekly in most boroughs (blue bin)
- Compost/food waste: weekly (brown bin) — mandatory in most boroughs
- Large items: scheduled pickups or call 311 for arrangements
- Electronics and hazardous waste: bring to an Écocentre (free drop-off depots)
Bins are usually provided by the borough. If yours are missing, call 311.
Snow Removal & Winter Parking
Montreal's winter parking rules are critical — get them wrong and you'll be towed ($150+ fine + towing fees):
- Snow removal operations: When your street is being cleared, ALL cars must move. Signs are posted 12+ hours in advance
- Sign up for Montreal's Info-Neige alerts (email/SMS) to know when your street is being cleared
- Red blinking lights on street poles = snow removal in progress, your car must not be on the street
- Winter parking ban: December 1 to March 15, no overnight parking on some arterial roads
- Get a residential parking permit ($175/year) from your borough if you park on the street
Community Resources
Montreal has excellent community infrastructure:
- Community centers (maisons de la culture) — free or low-cost activities, art, fitness
- Public libraries (Bibliothèques de Montréal) — free membership, events, coworking spaces
- Public pools and sports facilities — many are free or low-cost ($)
- Bixi bike-sharing — seasonal memberships ($92/year) or pay-per-ride
- 311 — Montreal's citizen hotline for all municipal services and questions
