Section 3 of 5

Moving Day

Book the Elevator

If your building has an elevator, you must book it in advance for moving — often 2+ weeks ahead. Contact your building management (both old and new buildings). Most buildings restrict moves to weekdays and specific hours. Failing to book can delay your entire move.

Parking Permits for Moving Trucks

You can request a temporary no-parking zone from the City of Montreal for your moving truck. This ensures a spot right in front of your building.

  • Apply at your borough office or online at least 3 business days in advance
  • Cost: approximately $50–100 depending on the borough
  • The city will post temporary no-parking signs — cars that don't move will be towed
  • If you skip this step, you may have to double-park or carry items a long distance

Apartment Walkthrough

Before you leave your old apartment and when you receive your new one, do a thorough walkthrough. This protects you from being charged for pre-existing damage.

  • Take photos and videos of every room, with timestamps
  • Check: walls, floors, windows, doors, appliances, bathroom fixtures
  • Test: all light switches, outlets, faucets (hot and cold), toilet flush, stove burners
  • Note any damage on the lease inspection report (état des lieux)
  • Keep copies of all photos — send a summary to your landlord by email for a paper trail

Utility Transfers

Coordinate the transfer of services so there's no gap:

  • Hydro-Québec: Schedule transfer date online. Set the end date at your old place and start date at the new one
  • Internet: Book installation at least 1 week ahead. Confirm if your new building is wired for your provider
  • If moving between boroughs, check if waste collection days change

Tips for Moving in Winter

Montreal winters make moving harder. If you're moving between November and March:

  • Protect floors — lay cardboard or plastic sheeting in hallways and entry points
  • Wrap furniture in blankets or moving pads to prevent cold damage and moisture
  • Keep walkways salted and shoveled to prevent slips
  • Have the heat running in your new apartment before bringing in belongings
  • Allow extra time — everything takes longer in snow and ice
